Wide Open Spaces Chapter 4

Wide Open Spaces

Chapter 4: Yellowstone

One of the most unique natural environments on earth, Yellowstone is home to half of the planet’s geothermal features, including the world's most famous geyser, Old Faithful. As it spews 8,400 gallons of boiling water to the astonishing height of 145 feet, Old Faithful serves as a consistent reminder of ongoing volcanic activity in Yellowstone's Upper Geyser Basin. Its sheer force — and of course, reliability — is an inspiration to visitors and locals alike. (Wyoming Whiskey included.)

The Art of F. Jay Haynes

F. Jay Hayes played a landmark role in documenting the settlement and expansion of the American West in the late 19th and early 20th century. He made his first visit to Yellowstone National Park in 1881. The park made such an impression on Haynes that he became the official photographer of Yellowstone and returned every year until his death.

The Haynes Guide

One of Haynes' most substantial contributions to the history of Yellowstone is the beautifully composed Haynes Guidebook. Containing a wealth of park information, this resource was printed almost every year from 1890 to 1966 — making it the longest-running resource for generations of park visitors.

Postcards from Home

Haynes’ iconic photographs also took the form of postcards. The Haynes family created an estimated 55 million postcards over seven decades, giving visitors a way to bring home a piece of Yellowstone’s beauty for themselves or send it to a loved one in a distant place.
